The Covenant Maker | Genesis 15:1-20 | 5 Devotions on God’s Faithful Promises

Our sermon this week, The Covenant Maker from Genesis 15:1–20, reminds us that God is both the maker and keeper of His promises. To help you reflect further, we’ve prepared five days of devotions that flow out of the message. Each day includes a passage of Scripture, a short reflection, questions for personal or family use, and a prayer.

These devotions are designed to guide you deeper into God’s Word throughout the week and to encourage you to rest in His covenant faithfulness, fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Whether you use them on your own or around the table with your family, may they point you again to the God who calls, saves, and keeps His people.

Day 1: God Comes to Us

📖 Scripture: Genesis 15:1 and Psalm 16

💡 Reflection:

Abram’s story begins with God’s initiative. Abram wasn’t searching for God—he was living in idolatry. But God broke in with a call and a promise. This shows us the very nature of grace. Covenant always begins with God reaching down to His people, not with people climbing their way up to God.

In our own lives, we sometimes imagine that we started this relationship with the Lord by seeking Him out. Yet the Bible reminds us that “we love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Salvation doesn’t rest on our ability to find God; it rests on His mercy in coming to us. That’s why covenant is such good news—it depends on Him, not us.

❓Questions:

How does the story of Abram’s calling remind you of your own story of coming to faith?

Why is it significant that God initiates the covenant rather than us?

Why is it significant that God initiates the covenant rather than us?

How might remembering God’s initiative encourage you when you feel weak in your faith?

🙏 Prayer:

Gracious God, thank You that You came to me when I was lost and unable to find You. Remind me that my relationship with You rests on Your grace, not my striving. Help me to rest in the assurance that You are the One who calls, saves, and keeps Your people. Amen.

Day 2: God is Our Reward

📖 Scripture: Genesis 15:1 and Psalm 16

💡 Reflection:

God promised Abram, “I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” Abram had just turned down riches from the king of Sodom, but God assured him that the greatest treasure was not gold or land—it was God Himself.

We too live in a world where “reward” is often measured in money, success, or recognition. But the covenant reminds us that our true inheritance is God. As David wrote, “The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup” (Psalm 16:5). To belong to God and to have Him as our shield is better than anything the world can offer.

❓Questions:

What are some “rewards” you tend to chase after in life?

How does the truth that God Himself is your reward reframe your priorities?

How could this perspective shape the way you face disappointment or loss?

🙏 Prayer:

Lord, You are my portion and my prize. Forgive me for seeking fulfillment in lesser things. Teach me to treasure You above all, and help me to live as someone whose greatest reward is knowing You. Amen.

Day 3: Faith in God’s Promise

📖 Scripture: Genesis 15:2-6 and Romans 4:18-25

💡 Reflection:

Abram wrestled with doubts. How could God’s promise be true when he and Sarai were childless? Yet God took him outside to count the stars, reminding him that His word was bigger than Abram’s limitations. Abram “believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.”

Faith is not pretending there are no problems. It is trusting God’s word despite them. Paul tells us in Romans 4 that Abram’s faith was recorded for us too—that righteousness is credited to all who trust God’s promise fulfilled in Christ. When doubts creep in, we remember that faith rests not on what we see but on who God is and what He has said.

❓Questions:

What doubts or delays are you facing that make trusting God difficult?

How does Abram’s example encourage you to keep believing?

How does Christ’s finished work assure you that God always keeps His promises?

🙏 Prayer:

Faithful Father, You know my doubts and my fears. Help me to believe Your promises even when I cannot see the outcome. Strengthen my trust in Christ, who has fulfilled every covenant promise for me. Amen.

Day 4: God Bears the Burden

📖 Scripture: Genesis 15:7-18 and Jeremiah 31:31-34

💡 Reflection:

The covenant ceremony is startling. Animals are cut in two, but Abram never walks through them. Instead, God Himself passes through in the form of a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch. God took upon Himself the curse of the covenant, binding Himself to His promise.

This points us forward to Christ. On the cross, Jesus bore the curse of our covenant-breaking. He passed through the pieces for us, shedding His blood to secure God’s promises forever. Our salvation is not a fragile arrangement dependent on our strength—it rests on God’s unbreakable commitment in Christ.

❓Questions:

What does it mean to you that God, not Abram, passed through the pieces?

How does this picture of God’s covenant love deepen your assurance of salvation?

How does Christ’s sacrifice show us that God Himself has borne the weight of our sin?

🙏 Prayer:

Lord of the Covenant, thank You that You bore the burden I could never carry. Thank You that in Christ the covenant is fulfilled and sealed forever. Help me to rest in Your unfailing promises and to live in gratitude for the cross. Amen.

Day 5: Christ Fulfills the Covenant

📖 Scripture: Luke 22:14-20 and Hebrews 9:11-15

💡 Reflection:

At the Last Supper, Jesus took the cup and said, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” The covenant first promised to Abram finds its fulfillment in Christ’s blood, shed for His people. Every promise finds its “Yes and Amen” in Him.

Through Jesus, we are brought into covenant fellowship with God. We are shielded, we are rewarded, and we are secured in His love. The covenant is no longer only about land or descendants—it is about eternal life, forgiveness, and a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Christ has passed through the pieces once for all, and now nothing can separate us from His covenant love.

❓Questions:

How do you see the promises to Abram fulfilled in Jesus?

Why is it important to see the whole Bible as one covenant story?

How can you live this week in greater confidence

that you are secure in Christ?

🙏 Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You that by Your blood You have fulfilled the covenant promises of God. Keep me steadfast in faith, secure in Your love, and hopeful in the eternal inheritance that You have won for me. Amen.
